The Woodwork

The story behind the Woodwork

Buy It With Meaning, and Buy it Once

When you buy P&W custom woodwork, you’re not buying a mass produced piece of furniture, it's something that has gone through my hands only so that I can be happy with it leaving the shop.

Porter & Wood sources most of its timber from busted barns that farmers deem to be no longer of any use, which in a way reclaiming this timber is paying homage to the farmers who have weathered through thick and thin with their farms. As they would never give up on providing value, and neither will this timber!

If you would of asked my manual arts teacher, that I would later take on woodworking as a career, he would be shocked!

This is because I was no only not interested in it, but also horrible at it, however like many things, they change!

Furthermore, I strongly believe what keeps this side of the business alive, is the demand for quality. In my college years I was a sucker for the cheap mass produced ‘fast furniture’ as I was stuck for options due to lack of funds! On the flipside I now know first hand the importance of quality made furniture, which means using actual timber (not chipboard with timber veneer), and MUCH better joinery.

Another element with my furniture is of course the story!

For instance, being able to one day hand down a heirloom dining table to your kids, or being able to say that your furniture is a piece of rural Australia, as the timber for it was reclaimed from barns that farmers constructed on their land.

Carrying on, when you buy ‘Porter and Wood’ timber products, whether it be a dining table, chopping board and the like, you can be assured it has gone through my hands only. I’m not here to mass produce, by putting on a bunch of staff, I want to poke along at my own pace, making sure that every piece that leaves here passes my quality test! You know what they say, if you want something done right, you’ve got to do it yourself, and that’s the philosophy I am taking here!
